Solar battery brings cheaper power bills for Keith
Being pensioners Sandra and Keith didn’t think that they could afford a home battery system. Thanks to the Empowering Homes solar battery loan offer they have been able to add a battery to their existing solar system and have seen significant reductions in their electricity bills.
COVID-19 has affected Sandra and Keith’s comfortable retirement, with Sandra needing to home-school her three grandchildren for eight weeks while their parents worked. “The kids were really keen at first, but by the end, they were over it, and so was I. My mother is also in a nursing home, so I couldn’t see her for much of the year.”
Despite these challenges, Sandra and Keith enjoy living in the seaside village of Harrington on the NSW Mid Coast - popular with retirees for fishing, golfing and the bowling club. Sandra and Keith’s house came with solar, which was a big plus. “We were familiar with solar, having installed it at our previous house and it was great not to get big electricity bills,” says Sandra.
“We thought about getting a solar battery before, but the quotes were as much as $15,000, and we’re both on the pension”. Then she saw a promotion for the NSW Government’s Empowering Homes solar battery loan offer. “I worked out that the interest-free loan repayments over 10 years would be less than our existing electricity bills.”
Thanks to the offer the couple have been able to add a new 2.8kWh battery to their existing solar.
“The application was straightforward, and the installation was quick. The installer also showed us how to use the app, to work out our energy use, how much energy the solar panels generate and how much we’re taking from the electricity grid. It’s really interesting,” says Sandra.
The app has helped them adjust the way they use their appliances to get the most savings.
“I used to think - I don’t want to look at those dishes in the morning, I’ll run the dishwasher at night”. But when I saw how much it was draining the battery, I started checking the app before I ran anything. Our first electricity bill after the battery was installed, came down by about $200,” says Sandra.
Sandra and Keith intend to use the money saved with their new battery system to help pay for a trip to see family in Queensland.
